Patient information may be disclosed to provide medical treatment or services. This may include providers outside of Sabetha EMS who are involved in the medical care of the patient.
Sabetha EMS, as an organization and through its employees, trainees, observers, and others who have occasion to observe or to participate in the organization’s activities, has a legal and ethical responsibility to maintain the privacy, to protect the confidentiality, and to safeguard the personal health information of its patients.
During the course of employment/affiliation/observation with Sabetha EMS, confidential information such as operational or individual information may be seen or heard that Sabetha EMS is obligated to maintain as confidential.
As a condition of employment/affiliation/observation with Sabetha EMS each individual must comply with privacy procedures.
Disclosure of patient care information and/or confidential information will occur only if such disclosure complies with Sabetha EMS’s policies, and is required for the performance of employment/affiliation/observation.
- No facilitation of the relay of any confidential information for any individual or party who does not have proper authorization to access such information shall be permitted.
- No unauthorized transmissions, copies, disclosures, inquiries, modifications, or purging of patient information or confidential information shall be permitted. Such unauthorized transmissions include but are not limited to; removing and/or transferring confidential information from Sabetha EMS’s computer system(s) to unauthorized locations (for instance, home, unless specifically authorized).
- Access code(s), user ID (s), access keys and passwords used to access computer systems or other equipment shall be kept confidential at all times.
- Upon termination of employment/affiliation/observation with Sabetha EMS, all property (keys, documents, ID badges) shall be returned to Sabetha EMS.
- Obligations regarding confidential information will continue after the termination of employment/affiliation/observation with Sabetha EMS.
- Violation of these principles may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment/affiliation/observation with Sabetha EMS and/or suspension, restriction or loss of privileges, in accordance with Sabetha EMS policies, as well as potential personal civil and criminal legal penalties.
